Georgia: Majority of kindergartens in CoM East signatory Batumi will become energy efficient

The first stage of "Energy Efficiency Measures and Approach to EU Energy Efficiency Standards in Buildings" project envisages the implementation of demonstration projects in CoM signatory, Batumi. 

25 kindergartens and one historic building in Batumi will be rehabilitated with energy efficient technologies, for which more than 7 million euros will be spent. This demonstration project will introduce European standards of energy efficiency and will be implemented through grant funds provided by the KfW Development Bank.

These 25 kindergartens were selected from the 32 kindergartens functioning in the city on the basis of preliminary study as having potential for energy efficiency. A historic building has also been selected. Specialists plan to rehabilitate the Black Sea Flora and Fauna Scientific Research Center in Batumi's central park. 

Batumi is the first city in Georgia to implement European energy efficiency standards in kindergartens. The second component of the project envisasges the replication of the demonstration project at the national level and one of its goals, along with the introduction and use of energy-saving technologies, is the development of market for energy efficient materials in Georgia. The project will be implemented in 2020 - 2024. 

Batumi city is among 23 Georgian CoM signatories. It joined the initiative in 2011 and took the obligations to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020. The implementation of this demonstration project alongside with social and economic benefits will have environmental impact and help the municipality to meet undertaken obligations under CoM.
