Hydropower Unit 6 of the Kyiv Pumped-Storage Power Plant (PSPP) is back in operation after reconstruction activities implemented with financial support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Thanks to the newly installed turbine and generator, the total capacity of the unit increased from 41.5 MW to 46.8 MW (an increase of 13%) and its service life was extended by 40 years.

“Upgrades to existing hydroelectric facilities like this offer both communities and enterprises access to more reliable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly electricity generation. It also allows Ukraine to increase the share of electricity generation from renewable sources and fulfil its European commitment to take part in the global effort to combat climate change,” said Jean-Erik de Zagon, Head of the EIB Representation in Ukraine.

“When we have a very low water year, hydroelectric power plants operate under reduced load and because of this we feel a lack of shunting power in our power system. Increasing electricity production at hydropower plants (HPPs) and PSPPs can solve this problem, as well as help to improve the environmental situation and reduce emissions,” said acting Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection, Olga Buslavets.

The hydropower plant rehabilitation project is funded by a EUR 200 million loan from the EIB, aimed at upgrading and refurbishing 21 hydropower units owned by Ukrhydroenergo (UHE) along the Dnieper river. The project will improve the environmental safety of the hydroelectric units, which is an important component considering the critical role the Dnieper river plays for water supply in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.
