From 31 August – 2 September, the Belarusian town of Polack hosted a light festival for the first time. During the festival, 10 light installations illuminated the streets of Polack and more than a dozen events were organised.

Polack’s citizens and visitors had the chance to see 3D projections on the facade of the Dzvina hotel, take part in nighttime tours of the town, attend public lectures, take part in masterclasses on night photography, watch fire shows and compete in a bicycle race.

Polack Light Festival was organised as part of the ‘PubLiCity’ project, which is funded by the EU under its ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects’ programme. The project is implemented by Polack District Executive Committee and the Interakcia Foundation. As a result of the project, public lighting will be modernised in 16 of the town’s streets.

Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects (CoM-DeP) are part of the EU4Energy initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
