Cantemir has become one of the first cities in the Republic of Moldova to have smart and energy-efficient street lighting, thanks to the EU-funded ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects’ programme.

The newly installed system allows street lighting operators to control and monitor the street lighting system remotely through GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) networks. This smart technology, in combination with energy-efficient LED lights will enable savings of up to 80% on electricity. The modernisation of the street lighting system in Cantemir was carried out on over 11 km of streets, as a total of 419 inefficient lamps were replaced with smart and energy efficient LED lights.

This EU-supported project will benefit around 5,000 inhabitants of Cantemir. “This is good for the municipal budget as it frees up funds for new investments, such as in education or for social projects”, said Roman Ciubaciuc, Mayor of Cantemir. The smart LEDs will also help reduce CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 4,451 planted trees.
