An EU-funded pilot project in Ukraine helped develop methodologies for monitoring critical structures at the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant in western Ukraine.

The methodologies delivered and tested included a comprehensive ‘Integrity Management Programme’ and operating guidelines and a structural model of the plant’s reactor building, developed with the state-of-the-art ANSYS engineering simulation tool.

The three-year project, which comes to an end in November 2018, had a budget of €1.5 million. It was implemented in the framework of the EU’s Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation.

The pilot project will now be replicated on other nuclear power plants in Ukraine to further enhance their safety and their ability to withstand extreme pressure such as earthquakes and tornadoes.
