On 20 February, the EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger, in charge of Budget and Human Resources, paid a one-day visit to Baku, Azerbaijan to attend the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council.

In the framework of the visit, Commissioner Oettinger signed the Joint Declaration on the Southern Gas Corridor and made press statements together with the Energy Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov.

Commissioner Oettinger welcomed the signature of the Joint Declaration of the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the Advisory Council of the Southern Gas Corridor as “an important step for the further diversification of energy sources and routes in Europe”. He said the partners “should make best use of the new infrastructure and envisage to at least double its capacity as soon as possible”.

Alongside the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Meeting, the Commissioner had bilateral meetings with the country’s President and Minister of Energy.
