On 23 June, EU4Energy organised the first stakeholder meeting to support the Republic of Moldova in developing a methodology for the roll-out of smart meters.

Smart meters measure energy use and automatically send the information to the energy supplier. They allow consumers to better manage their energy use, save money and reduce emissions. The roll-out of smart meters in Moldova will improve the quality of services and open up new opportunities for consumers to engage in the market.

The methodology for assessing the costs and benefits of smart meters in Moldova will be developed jointly by the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, the National Energy Regulatory Agency, the transmission system operator Moldelectrica, distribution system operators, and Energy Community experts. Based on a gap analysis of existing legislation, the experts will also propose a roadmap to implement the technological transition.

The ‘EU4Energy’ initiative covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity. It promotes energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine). The initiative does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the longer term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
