On 30 November, two major online events dedicated to energy, the environment and climate change took place in Ukraine, bringing together high-level EU and Ukrainian government officials, as well as companies and key stakeholders. The high-level discussion was followed by a webinar titled ‘Turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities’, where companies and key stakeholders from Ukraine and the EU looked closer at business cases for energy efficiency as well as the energy and coal transition.

The events were attended by Matti Maasikas, Ambassador of the EU in Ukraine, Olga Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Finland, Krista Mikkonen, the Minister of Energy of Lithuania, Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, and the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Roman Abramovsky. The participants discussed initiatives on climate action, green recovery, energy efficiency, the energy and coal transition, green entrepreneurship, waste management, as well as the circular economy and the outlook for the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Ambassador Matti Maasikas, said:

“Climate change is not a remote threat, it is hitting us already now. We can find a way to turn the current crisis into an opportunity and support green recovery, build back better, build new economies, carbon neutral and innovation based. Ukraine has repeatedly signalled its interest in the Green Deal. The EU is happy to recognise this interest. At the EU–Ukraine Summit in October, an agreement was reached to further cooperate on the Green Deal through a focused dialogue.”
