The street lighting systems in the Moldovan cities of Ocnița and Cantemir have been modernised thanks to the project ‘Green light, Moldova – modernisation and saving energy in street lighting’. The project was implemented by the Alliance for Energy Efficiency and Renewables under the EU-funded programme ‘Covenant of Mayors – demonstration projects’, which is part of the ‘EU4Energy’ initiative.

In total, the project replaced over 930 old lamp posts with new energy-efficient LED lights that use 30% less energy.

In a new video published by ‘Covenant of Mayors East’, Cantemir resident Iuliana Ciobanu said:

“I’ve lived in Cantemir all my life. We are happy for the changes and appreciate them a lot. The difference is quite visible. Our local park is very well lit, which makes our city more beautiful, and we enjoy spending time there. I also think the number of accidents has decreased. Lots of cyclists cross the park on their way home in the evening, so my kid can play outside until late.”   

Earlier this year, the EU project won the 2020 EU Sustainable Energy Award for the Eastern Partnership.
