The National Energy Company Ukrenergo will receive major financial support to modernise the Ukraine’s power transmission system following an investment of up to €149 million by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

As part of this, 26 new transformers will be acquired and 12 high-voltage substations upgraded. This will allow the modernisation of Ukraine’s key transmission infrastructure and the synchronisation of Ukrainian and European electricity networks. It will also assist Ukraine in aligning its legal framework and operational practices with the EU’s 3rd Energy Package.

The investment will strengthen Ukrenergo’s capacity to accommodate the growing share of renewables in the Ukrainian grid, with an increasing share of wind and solar power. It will also contribute to the annual reduction of CO2 emissions by 20,500 tonnes.
