A modern newly-built, energy-efficient kindergarten in Simoniantkhevi village, Georgia, opened its doors on September 18 to children from six nearby villages.

Before 2018, the village kindergarten was hosted in an old dilapidated building, which posed a threat to children’s health and safety. In less than a year, the local authorities managed to build an energy-efficient kindergarten with a modern, autonomous heating system, insulated roof and floor, double-glazed windows and doors. Thanks to the support received from Energy Efficiency Centre in Georgia, Covenant of Mayors East, a grid connected photovoltaic plant   was installed. This solar power plant will enable the kindergarten to save about 2,000 kWh of electricity annually and reduce energy bills and CO2 emissions.

Tianeti Municipality is among 23 Georgian signatories of the EU-supported Covenant of Mayors East. It joined the initiative in 2015 and adopted the obligations to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020. The implementation of similar projects will help the municipality to meet the undertaken commitments.
