EU4Energy: Lower emissions, higher grades

Brief Description

An injection of EU-funds coupled with expert investment advice look set to improve the energy efficiency of a number of top universities across Ukraine. Both initiatives will cut CO2 emissions, while an enhanced learning experience is on the horizon for both teachers and students in Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv, Poltava, Sumy and Vinnytsia universities.

Objectives

Why is this needed?

According to the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, close to a third of heat in the country’s public buildings built before 1990 is lost. Upgrades are therefore necessary to extend the life cycle of many of Ukraine’s university buildings constructed before this date.

Actions in brief

How can the project help?

A technical assistance project provides advice to each participating university in the preparation, management, evaluation, monitoring and audit of their respective energy efficiency project. The second will see the energy efficiency works carried out at the participating universities with the help of EU funds. Teaching, research and support facilities are to also be modernised under the project.

What results are expected?

Some 250 buildings will be completely renovated in the seven participating universities across Ukraine. Work will be carried out on improving building insulation, whilst new heating, ventilation and lighting systems will also be installed. The renovations will reduce running costs at the universities involved, cut CO2 emissions, and also reduce energy consumption by some 60%. As a result of the project, other higher education institutions are expected to follow suit and introduce similar measures.
