EU4Energy and the Energy Community are constantly striving to strengthen energy security in the Moldova/Ukraine region. As a result of joint efforts during the 17th meeting of the Energy Community Ministerial Council, held in Chișinău, Moldova on 13 December, Moldova and Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the area of Security of Gas Supply.

Under the Memorandum, Moldova and the Ukraine agreed to inform each other immediately in case of a national gas crisis. The Memorandum recognizes solidarity as a guiding principle of cooperation in a natural gas emergency. According to the agreement, the two signatories will endeavour to work together, and to examine how their national emergency measures might be applied in a coordinated manner, in order to ensure gas supplies to the citizens of both countries.

The Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, Mr Janez Kopač, said: ‘This is a practical example of embracing solidarity as a principle in the common work on security of gas supplies. The joint work of Moldova and Ukraine is a best practice for other contracting parties.’
