Kyiv has received the first of 20 new trams to be purchased with funds from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Overall, the Ukrainian will receive a €24.9 million loan to upgrade its tram fleet.

The new tram is a 3-section low-floor model, equipped with 57 seats (including for passengers with disabilities), climate control and air conditioning systems. In total, the vehicle can carry approximately 300 passengers. The first tram for Kyiv will be assigned to the Darnytskyi depot and put into operation on the Left Bank route.

“The new trams will not only increase the comfort of residents and guests of the capital, but also accelerate the transition to more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly transport,” Vitaliy Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, said.

The remaining trams are expected to be delivered by the beginning of 2023.

Within the first phase of the Ukraine Urban Public Transport Project (UUPTP), supported by the EU, the country will receive a €200 million loan to improve public transport infrastructure in 11 municipalities and to harmonise it with EU standards and policies.
