The project “Biomass Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies as Sustainable Energy Solutions for Covenant of Mayors signatories in Georgia”, funded by the EU project “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects” (CoM-DeP) and co-financed by the Telavi Municipality City Hall, is among the 9 winners of the 2019-2020 Best Practices contest for municipalities organized under the EU supported project “Networking for Efficiency and Development” (N4ED). The project is being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Center in Georgia, which is the Covenant of Mayors supporter in Georgia.

The project envisages the complete thermal modernization of two kindergartens in Telavi municipality with application of renewable energy sources and energy efficient technologies, as well as the construction of modern autonomous biomass heating systems, the establishment of a biomass (vine prunings) supply chain using innovative technologies to replace imported natural gas and unsustainably harvested fuel wood. The project will assist the municipality with fulfilling its commitments under the Covenant of Mayors on the reduction of CO2 emissions on its territory.

The National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG) has annually held the Best Practices Contest, the National Conference on Best Practices and the Awards Ceremony for the past three years. At the third national conference of Best Practice Program, which took place on March 12, 2021, the 2020 Evaluation Commission and the Steering Committee revealed 9 best practices out of 22 projects submitted by the municipalities of Georgia.
