On 21 April, the International Energy Agency (IEA) held a meeting to discuss the role of energy efficiency in improving governments’ stimulus packages during the COVID-19 crisis. The meeting touched upon the topic of ensuring long-term improvements in energy systems, and the potential for energy efficiency to create jobs and boost economic growth.

“Experience has proven the effectiveness of including energy efficiency in stimulus programmes,” said IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol. “Targeted investments now can create jobs immediately and also bring long-term benefits for consumers, businesses and the environment.”

Based on the meeting, the Commission will publish its recommendations in the coming months, with advice to governments on how they can effectively accelerate energy efficiency progress through policy action.
