The Alliance for Energy Efficiency and Renewables (AEER) has launched a new project that will help Cantemir city (Republic of Moldova) reduce its CO2 emissions and achieve its goals. The project is titled ‘Strengthening local capacities for the implementation of sustainable energy strategy in the city of Cantemir’. The AEER is a supporter of the EU-funded initiative ‘Covenant of Mayors East’, and a beneficiary of the EU’s Local Grants Programme.

The project is implemented thanks to a grant from the EU, aimed at involving the local civil society in the decision-making process on the provision of quality utility services, energy efficiency policies and the use of renewable energy sources. The project involves informing and consulting the public on organising the infrastructure for a biomass boiler house, which is to be built within the framework of the ‘Covenant of Mayors East – Demonstration Projects’ initiative.

The project envisages the organisation of logistics for collecting, storing and using biomass, the construction of a storage facility for bio-fuel and the purchase of equipment. Particular attention will be paid to the transfer of AEER experience to civil society activists at all stages of the project. The project also has an educational component – it aims to train activists to identify gaps and problems in financing energy efficiency projects at the local and national levels.
