The second largest city in the Republic of Moldova, Bălți, has started developing its Green City Action Plan. The plan is developed under Green citiesthe flagship urban sustainability programme of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) – and with support from the government of Sweden. The policy document will help to identify, prioritise and implement key actions to improve the urban environment and people’s lives in Bălți.

As part of the programme, the city will renew its trolleybus fleet. With a €2.5 million loan from the EBRD and a further €1.2 million grant from the EU-supported Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P), the city will benefit from 11 new energy-efficient trolleybuses and greener public transport.

The public transport vehicles will run on electricity, and their new battery-charging technology will allow them to access remote areas without the need of overhead wires. Overall, some 150,000 people living in the city will benefit from the investment. The project will also contribute to the expansion of existing routes, serve densely populated areas and improve the overall efficiency of the service.
