The ‘EU4Energy Governance’ project is running a campaign to raise awareness of the project’s work and the benefits of energy reforms in the six Eastern partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine).

As part of this campaign, the project uses the hashtag #EnergyReforms4Citizens on social media to share simple tips on energy efficiency that people can follow to save energy. The campaign also raises awareness about energy poverty. Here are some findings about this phenomenon:

  • Energy poverty happens when individuals or households cannot adequately heat their homes or use energy services at an affordable price.
  • This can be due to a combination of high energy use, low household income, inefficient buildings and appliances, and specific household energy needs.
  • Energy poverty can result in respiratory and cardiac illnesses and mental health issues.
  • Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine have good access to electricity and gas, but there are still energy-poor households in these countries. The EU is committed to tackling energy poverty through its ‘2019 Clean energy for all Europeans’ package;
  • The Energy Community will assess the number of energy-poor households in its Contracting Parties. The resulting study will propose policies and measures for addressing energy poverty.
