One of the largest towns in northern Ukraine, Konotop, has implemented major energy modernisation works to make its public buildings more comfortable and energy efficient. Since Konotop joined the EU programmes ‘Covenant of Mayors for climate and energy’ and ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration projects’ in 2014, various public facilities such as schools, preschools, hospitals, cultural and sports buildings have been refurbished.

Preschool No. 10 Yalynka and Konotop Grammar School are currently undergoing comprehensive repairs. As part of the ‘Covenant of Mayors’ programme, Yalynka’s façade has been insulated, the roof has been repaired, the windows have been replaced with double glazed units, and the building has been equipped with anti-lightning protection and ramps. Also, thanks to the project, Yalynka is the first public building in Konotop to have a heat recovery system. As a result, during the winter of 2019–2020 Yalynka consumed twice as less energy than in 2015–2016, saving nearly UAH 19,000 (over €550).

Konotop Grammar School is going through similar modernisation works. As a result, the temperature in the building no longer drops below 20 degrees. Compared to the winter of 2015–2016, in 2019–2020 the school saved over UAH 15,000 (around €450) on the energy costs.

After all repair works are completed, the buildings are expected to have energy savings of over €2,000 a year.
