On 11 May, the European Council approved the conclusions on the Eastern Partnership policy beyond 2020.

The conclusions welcomed the significant achievements of the Eastern Partnership, and re-affirmed the EU’s approach based on conditions and incentives to encourage reforms in the Eastern partner countries.

The Council confirmed that the current policy framework, including the set of ’20 deliverables for 2020’, is valid and brings tangible results and benefits for people.

Additionally, the Council highlighted that it is important for the future Eastern Partnership to be more strategic, ambitious, flexible and inclusive, allowing participants to tackle common and global challenges together, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The next Eastern Partnership Summit is expected to review the results achieved since the last Summit in 2017 and endorse long-term policy objectives. The meeting will set out the way forward to a deeper cooperation, and will allow countries to start their preparatory work on their deliverables beyond 2020.
