Masty, a city in Grodno Region, Belarus, has completed an EU-funded ecological initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by installing a heat pump at the city’s sewage treatment plant.

The project saw the installation of a heat pump and replacement of the heating system in one of the administrative buildings and the air pumping station of the sewage treatment facilities. The facility is now heated and receives hot water by recuperating heat from the wastewater entering the treatment.

Wastewater is a stable source of renewable heat throughout the year. Its temperature is higher than most other regenerative energy sources, such as water or geothermal energy, and reaches an average of over 21° C when it leaves the building.

The project also carried out awareness raising among local children with special needs.

The initiative in Masty was implemented by the ‘Belarusian Society of Disabled People’ as part of the EU-funded the project ‘Civic engagement in environmental monitoring and improving environmental management at the local level’, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in Belarus in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.
