On 12 May, the Council of the European Union adopted the Regulation establishing the Euratom Research and Training Programme for 2021-2025. The programme has a budget of more than €1.38 billion and will complement another European framework programme, ‘Horizon Europe’.

The newly adopted Programme will contribute to fusion and fission research, support Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and strengthen Europe’s nuclear expertise and competences.

The Programme will contribute to the implementation of the European Research Roadmap to the realisation of Fusion Energy, which represents a long-term option for large‑scale, low‑carbon electricity production.

The Programme also puts emphasis on Europe’s nuclear expertise and competences through mobility, education and training (via Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions) as well as dissemination and technology transfer.

One of the ongoing Euratom projects is the HARMONIC project (‘Health Effects of Cardiac Fluoroscopy and Modern Radiotherapy in Paediatrics’) launched in 2019 with Euratom support of €7 million and led by 24 partners from 11 Member States, Ukraine and Switzerland. Within this investigation, the increasing use of radiation-associated diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have contributed to the improvements of early diagnosis and survival of paediatric patients.
