As part of the EU-funded initiative “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects”, Zhovkva, in Ukraine, has modernised its municipal heating system, switched to biomass sources and replaced old pipes. It has also refurbished a public kindergarten and installed individual heating points in five blocks of flats. The results of the project were presented during an official ceremony that took place on 28 March.

These energy efficiency measures will help the town to save €21,000 a year from its public budget on heating. The renovation of the kindergarten helped to reduce energy consumption by 60% and reduce spending on heating and electricity by more than €6,000 per year.

“The conditions in the kindergarten are much better and […] the children are not getting sick anymore,” says Ekaterina Goncharenko, a teacher at the kindergarten.
