The EU-funded Covenant of Mayors initiative held a conference in Polack, Belarus on 25-26 April. So far, 45 Belarusian cities have become signatories of the initiative.

The discussions at the conference covered the improvement of energy efficiency in apartment buildings, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the waste management sector, adaptation to climate change and green infrastructure in cities. In particular, the conference focused on financial mechanisms available for cities for improving energy performance, increasing energy efficiency and adapting to climate change.

Over the course of 2018-2019, Belarus implemented 10 local energy efficiency projects with EU support. They included creating energy info centres in Braslaŭ and Bielaaziorsk, renovating boiler houses in Brest and a sauna complex in Hlybokaje, developing cycling infrastructure in Kobryn, Viliejka and Čavusy and developing a green zone network in Čavusy. Five Belarusian cities – Polack, Braslaŭ, Čavusy, Ašmiany and Biaroza – received grants under the “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects” programme of the European Union for the Eastern partner countries.

The conference was held under the EU-funded project “Strengthening the Covenant of Mayors Movement in Belarus”.
