EU4Energy: Upgrading Ukraine’s Power Transmission Network

Brief Description

EU funds and expert advice are helping Ukraine’s national energy company Ukrenergo modernise the country’s existing power transmission network.

Objectives

Why is this needed?

The percentage of worn-out infrastructure in the Ukrainian electrical grid has reached critical levels and significant upgrades to the country’s power grid are required in order to accommodate demand for electricity during peak hours, and to improve energy security and reliability.

Actions in brief

How can the project help?

The funds are firstly being used to help assess the feasibility of the 750 kV Novo Kakhovska – Prymorska – Khmelnytska line project.  An environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) is also being carried out, while experts are providing overall procurement assistance to staff at Ukrenergo.

In addition, both engineering and consultancy services are on offer to help in the construction of the Zaporizhia-Kakhovka line. A second feasibly study is being developed for the Novoodeska-Artsyz line, while engineering and consultancy services are also being provided.

What results are expected?

A new 190 km 750 kV line stretching from Zaporizhzhia to Kakhovka substations is foreseen. Kakhovka also stands to benefit from a 750/330 kV substation complete with two automatic transformers. And a further 140 km 330 kV line from Novoodeska to Artsyz is in the making as is a second 200 MVA autotransformer at Artsyz substation.
