This winter will be different for the children and teachers from Novovolynsk School No. 7 in Ukraine thanks to support from the European Union! The building, selected as one of the municipally-owned premises with the highest energy loss in the area now has a modern heating, ventilation and lighting systems. The school will reduce its energy consumption by 65% as a result of the renovation works: replaced windows, insulated walls, installed outdoor lighting and an individual heating unit.

“Energy efficiency and energy independence remain a priority for EU-Ukraine relations. Therefore, we are happy to support concrete projects in smaller cities such as Novovolynsk, that bring tangible results for citizens and help to reduce energy consumption,” said Johannes Baur, Head of Economic Cooperation, Energy, Infrastructure and the Environment at the EU Delegation.

The changes were implemented within the project, ‘the first step in transition to renewable energy in the town of Novovolynsk’, as part of the Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects programme. As well as the school refurbishment, the project included closing an old inefficient boiler house and renovating the district heating system. The project implementation period was 2015-2019 and the budget exceeded € 1.15 million, with 80% of the contribution from the European Union and 20% paid by the town of Novovolynsk.

According to preliminary estimates, implementation of the whole project is expected to achieve СО2 emission reductions of over 488 tons a year, which is equal to using approximately 287 less cars each year.
