The Moldovan towns of Ocnita and Cantemir have switched to energy efficient street lighting thanks to the EU-financed “Green light Moldova” project, implemented as part of the “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects” programme.

235 street lamps have been replaced with energy efficient lamps in Ocnita, which covers more than 6,500 metres of street lighting. 75 street lamps – or 1,930 metres of lighting – will also be replaced in Cantemir in the framework of the same EU-funded project.

These changes will help both towns save energy and public money, and will improve the lives of residents of Ocnita and Cantemir. It is expected that all the works conducted through the project will be finalised by September 2018.

Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects (CoM-DeP) are part of the EU4Energy initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
