The EU-supported initiative ‘Covenant of Mayors East’ has launched a project in Biaroza, Belarus, aiming to replace over 4,000 street lamps with new energy-efficient LED lighting. The new streetlights will be controlled through an automated management system. As a result, the city’s 64,200 inhabitants will feel safer in the streets at night.
The new automatically controlled lights will cut Biaroza’s electricity costs by almost half (over 820 MWh/year), reducing the city’s CO2 emissions by 800 tonnes per year.
The total cost of the project is about €775,000, of which the EU will cover €620,000.
