Over 64,000 residents of the Belarusian town Bereza now feel comfortable and safe in the well-lit streets, while the town authorities pay reduced energy bills. These are the first results of the energy-efficient project ‘Implementation of LED-Based Street Lighting in Bereza Raion Using Automation and Control Systems’, funded by the European Union and implemented by the local administration. Its official closing ceremony took place on 5 February.

In 2017, as a participant of the Covenant of Mayors East initiative, the town applied for a grant and received the co-funding for street lighting refurbishment in Bereza Raion using automation and control systems. The overall cost of the project is €775,044. The European Union’s grant covered 80% of the cost.

During the project, 2,685 lamps were replaced with new efficient LED lamps. A smart grid’ system of public lighting has also been implemented.

According to preliminary estimates, town`s annual energy consumption will go down by 44%. Moreover, the installation of LED street lighting will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 724 tons – the annual amount of emissions produced by 464 cars.
