On December 9, 2019, the final workshop of the UNDP project “Standards and normative regulation for promoting energy efficiency in the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union” was held in Yerevan, where the main results of the project were presented.

The main goal of the regional project was to reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving the energy efficiency of lighting, household appliances and engineering equipment of buildings in Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, by introducing norms and standards of energy efficiency, as well as developing test facilities and promoting energy-efficient technologies by increasing end consumer awareness.

The project also contributed to the harmonization of test procedures, standards and labeling between the project participating countries.

At the regional level, along with other results, the project developed minimum (MEPS) and high (HEPS) energy efficiency requirements for lighting systems and minimum energy efficiency requirements for water heating and domestic heating equipment.

At the national level, the project developed a package of legislative amendments and a business case for introducing a system of state energy-efficient procurement in Armenia, and also provided expert support to the municipalities of Armenia on introducing a system of municipal energy management.

In addition, a photometric laboratory has been created in Armenia to test the energy efficiency indicators of lighting products, as well as a mobile lighting laboratory to monitor the quality and energy efficiency of street lighting systems.

As a part of awareness-raising activities, the project helped organize Energy Days in the Covenant of Mayors signatory city of the Vanadzor.

After the presentation of the project results, the seminar participants discussed the potential for energy conservation in the project countries, the prospects for cooperation in promoting energy efficiency, the procedures for introducing an energy-efficient public procurement system in Armenia in the context of adopting technical regulations on energy efficiency.

The event was attended by representatives of UNDP-Armenia, the Ministry of Territorial Development and Infrastructures of the Republic of Armenia (Agreement Coordinator in Armenia), the Energy Saving Fund and the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund of Armenia (Supporters of the Covenant), the EU project “Covenant of Mayors – East”, the City Hall of the signatory cities, as well as experts from the project team.
