Azerbaijan: Conference in Baku “Covenant of Mayors Initiative – from Commitments to Implementation”

On July 3,2018 a country-specific training on thema: “Covenant of Mayors Initiative – from Commitments to Implementation” was successfully held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The training brought together the representatives of the Ministries of Energy and Ecology & Natural Resources, various government agencies, city and district municipalities, experts from Georgia, Ukraine and Belarus working on CoM issues in partner countries within the CoM East program, CoM signatories from Azerbaijan.

In his welcome remarks the Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Ambassador  Kestutis Jankauskas spoke on the importance of  CoM initiative for achieving reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 40% by 2030 through the implementation of energy efficient measures and utilization of the renewable energy sources in Europe.  He expressed confidence that Azerbaijan would also increase energy efficiency and by joining CoM initiative will benefit from it.

In his address to the training participants, Deputy Minister of Energy, Gulmammad Javadov said that the EU’s CoM initiative which initially started with the ambition to gather local governments voluntarily committed to achieving and exceeding the EU climate and energy targets, now gathers more than 7,000 local and regional authorities across 57 countries.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that the Mingachevir Municipality and the State Historical-Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher” from Azerbaijan are CoM signatories and added that the Ministry supports the steps taken by the municipalities to join CoM initiative for efficient utilization of the country’s energy resources.

CoM East project Team Leader, Christophe Frering and experts from partner countries provided the training participants with detailed information on CoM and how it can support the cities and citizens of Azerbaijan, discussed achievements of Polotsk, partner city of Mingachevir and possibilities for cooperation, success achieved from sustainable energy policy to the actions by State Historical-Architectural Reserve ”Icherisheher” , the first CoM signatory in Azerbaijan., familiarized the audience with assistance the project provides to signatories in development and realization of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans.
