Georgia, Ozurgeti: Efficient street lighting

Introduction of the modern street lighting system in Ozurgeti has improved the illumination level on the streets, reduce energy consumption and energy bill, as well as decrease CO2 emissions thus contributing to the fulfilment by the Ozurgeti Municipality commitments under the Covenant of Mayors Program.

The project on introducing of the PV micro solar power systems for electrification of off grid mountain villages was implemented in 87 villages in Georgia and aimed to eliminate energy poverty. It was financed by State Budget, implemented with technical assistance of USAID.

By organizing 29 various digital and outdoor events the teams of 11 Georgian CoM signatories fought over the prizes in the CoM East contest for the "Best Digital Sustainable Energy Day-2020 Organizer", conducted by the CoM East together with the Energy Efficiency Center Georgia, which is the Covenant Supporter in Georgia. On July 10, 2020 during the online presentation of entries for the contest the best 3 organizers were announced. The best 3 organizers of the Sustainable Energy Days and prize winners became representatives of Mtskheta municipality - the 1st place, Gori and Bolnisi municipalities, the 2nd and 3rd place winners accordingly. All participating municipalities also received certificates of participation in Sustainable Energy Week EUSEW2020.

By sending their selfies shot against the renewable energy/energy efficiency technologies photo enthusiasts from Georgian CoM signatories fought over the prizes in the CoM East photo contest “We Go Sustainable”, conducted by the CoM East together with the Energy Efficiency Center Georgia, which is the Covenant Supporter in Georgia.

The special issue is dedicated to the European Sustainable Energy Week 2020, which was very unusual this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Totally, 85 Energy Days were organised by the CoM Signatories in the EaP countries, mostly in a digital format. The Newsletter highlights the main figures related to the participation of Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in the #EUSEW2020, including number and types of activities, social media engagement, regional quiz and special online events held by the CoM East project. On June 22-26, Georgia will host the Sustainable Energy Week. By doing so, the country joins EUSEW which is conducted since 2006 with the aim to exchange experiences and encouragement of new ideas in energy efficiency and renewable energy to achieve the EU's climate and energy goals on greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

According to Natia Turnava, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, the development of sustainable energy is important for Georgia's energy independence: "We greatly appreciate the support of the European Union and international donors in the implementation of energy reforms in Georgia, which aim to improve energy security through harmonization with European legislation, sustainable development with the utilization of renewable energy sources, application of energy efficiency in household and commercial sectors, liberalization of energy market, increase of sector’s investment attractiveness, etc.".
