Melitopol is a city in the Zaporizhia Oblast of south-eastern Ukraine with more than 155,000 inhabitants. With the EU’s support, the city’s public infrastructure facilities are set to get a new lease of life through modernisation works to make public buildings more energy-efficient. The works are planned for 10 buildings, including secondary schools, a music school, a sports centre and the Palace of Culture of Railway Workers. Another 5 facilities, including secondary schools, lyceums and preschools, were renovated and put into operation in 2019. This was possible thanks to financial support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Ukraine Early Recovery Programme.

Through the Early Recovery Programme, the European Investment Bank helps to remedy the consequences of conflict in the east of Ukraine. This includes repairs to hospitals, schools, kindergartens and residential, administrative and public buildings in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and adjacent Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia oblasts. At present, there are 257 projects operational under this programme.

“Renovating local schools, hospitals and other important infrastructure facilities tremendously improves the quality of life of local residents. We continue our support to the people in the Sea of Azov region and eastern Ukraine,” says Stefan Schleuning, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.

“We want to improve living and working conditions for tens of thousands of Melitopol residents, including internally displaced persons. Renovated schools, hospitals, maternity hospitals and other municipal facilities are aimed at improving their wellbeing,” says Jean-Eric de Zagon, Head of the EIB Representation in Ukraine.
