On 8 September, the ‘EU4Energy Governance’ project hosted a high-level talk on the development of clean energy in Ukraine. The event aimed to discuss the challenges of transposing three key pieces of energy-related legislation: the Large Combustion Plants, Sulphur in Fuels and Fuel Quality directives.

The session was organised together with the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine. The event was attended by representatives of both ministries, as well as the European Commission and Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's unicameral parliament).

The participants discussed the implementation of the Large Combustion Plants Directive in Ukraine, which started with the adoption of the National Emission Reduction Plan in 2017.

The transposition of the Fuel Quality Directive is obligatory under the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement. However, to reduce its emissions and improve the transparency of its fuel market, Ukraine needs to harmonise its inspection systems and its standards for fuel quality with the EU.
