The city of Berdyansk in Ukraine celebrated the EU Sustainable Energy Days this autumn. Berdyansk is a signatory of the Covenant of Mayors Agreement on Climate and Energy and the ‘Covenant of Mayors East’ initiative.

The Sustainable Energy Days are held within the European Sustainable Energy Week, the largest event dedicated to renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Europe and beyond.

This year, all secondary schools in the city joined the initiative. Almost 100 events were held: drawing exhibitions and competitions, photo contests, quizzes, screenings of films on environmental issues, conferences, educational classes, flash mobs, interactive games and many others. All events were on the topic of energy efficiency, renewables and the environment.

Students in Berdyansk learnt how to save energy and to become more energy efficient, discussed ways to combat global warming and presented projects showcasing alternative sources of energy that could bring Ukraine more energy independence. These activities helped them to understand the importance of energy conservation and take responsibility for the future of the planet.
