What do 10,300 municipalities in 130 countries with more than 830 million citizens have in common? They are all part of the EU-funded Covenant of Mayors initiative, which aims to combat climate change with energy efficiency measures and CO2 reduction at local level. In Georgia, 24 municipalities are part of the initiative, committing to reduce CO2 emissions from sources located within their boundaries by up to 30% by 2030.

Thanks to the initiative and the EU-funded project ‘Biomass Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies', two preschools in the city of Telavi, Kakheti Region, Georgia, are being retrofitted. The project will help the preschools to undergo comprehensive thermal refurbishments and switch to more energy efficient biomass heating. As a result, the new energy efficient solutions will considerably reduce heating costs and create a healthy environment for 280 students and more than 40 employees. In addition, the biomass heating systems installed in both buildings will save up to 496,000 kilowatts of energy in total and up to 170 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The project is funded by the EU programme ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects’ under the EU4Energy initiative and is implemented by the Energy Efficiency Centre in Georgia. The EU’s total contribution to the project is nearly €600,000 with co-financing from Telavi Municipality of almost €150,000.
