The residents of Fastiv, situated in Kyiv Oblast, are already benefiting from modernised street lights and refurbished education buildings. As a result of the modernisation, the city will save approximately 650 MWh each year on heating in the renovated buildings and around 600 MWh on electricity from the new lighting system. As a result, the city will save a total of €110,000 annually. The modernisation was made possible by an energy efficiency project, supported by a loan from the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) and a grant from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environmental Partnership (E5P).

As part of the project, four education facilities (two schools and two day-care centres) were modernised. Windows and doors were replaced and the buildings were insulated. Furthermore, to improve the efficiency of hot water production, heat regulations and a heat pump were installed in one of the day-care centres. Consequently, energy consumption has decreased by 30%, significantly increasing the comfort of over 1,800 children and staff.

Modernising the street lights included replacing over 1,000 luminaries with new LED lamps, which cover about 25% of the city’s total street light network. The new energy-efficient outdoor lighting has resulted in several benefits for the residents: the LED lamps have reduced electricity consumption and maintenance costs by around 50%. Additionally, the well-lit streets and city roads have significantly improved the safety of both drivers and pedestrians.
