Six signatories of the EU-supported initiative the Covenant of Mayors — Kutaisi, Gori, Telavi, Zugdidi, Rustavi and Poti – will soon have 100 new modern energy-efficient buses. The new buses will have lower fuel consumption per passenger, contributing to a reduction of emissions and a significant reduction of air pollutants.

The towns will receive the buses as part of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) Urban Transport Enhancement Programme. The total project costs €11,800,000. The EBRD will allocate €10,000,000.

Another Georgian Covenant of Mayors signatory, Batumi, is also planning to renew its fleet of municipal transport. Batumi has signed a contract for the supply of eight units of electric buses. The electric buses will be equipped with video surveillance and an air conditioning system for the driver’s cab and passenger compartment. The delivery of buses is scheduled for the second quarter of 2020. 

The introduction of low-emission busses conforming to high safety standards and European regulations will result in a dramatic reduction of emissions, improving local air quality, bringing economic and public health benefits and contributing to the fulfilment of commitments undertaken by these cities regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions in their territories.
