On 10 December 2019, in Hrodna, Belarus, the international initiative of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy signed an agreement with Hrodna Regional Executive Committee. Hrodna became the fourth regional capital to join the initiative and make a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the agreement, the city will strive to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by the year 2030.

The first Belarusian cities joined the Covenant of Mayors initiative in 2011 and currently 50 cities and towns have signed the agreement. In total, five Belarusian cities (Ašmiany, Biaroza, Braslaŭ, Čavusy,  Polack) have received grants from the EU’s ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects’ programme for the Eastern Partnership countries.

Ten more initiatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local authorities have received financial support under the EU project ‘Strong CoM – Strengthening the Covenant of Mayors Movement in Belarus’. They include: the development and establishment of a demonstration information centre in Bielaaziorsk and Braslaŭ; the upgrade of a boiler house in Brest and a sauna complex in Hlybokaje; a cycling movement in Čavusy, Kobryn and Viliejka; and the creation of green zones in Čavusy.

Representatives of the NGO ‘Ecopartnership International’ and the coordinator of the EU project ‘Strong CoM – Strengthening the Covenant of Mayors Movement in Belarus’ attended the event.
