A new EU-funded project aiming to refurbish street lighting in the city of Gyumri, Armenia, was launched on 3 March. The project is part of the ‘Gyumri Urban Roads’ project, funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the EU-supported Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) fund.

The EU Ambassador to Armenia, Andrea Wiktorin, participated in the signing ceremony together with the Armenian Minister of Finance, Atom Janjughazyan, the Mayor of Gyumri, Samvel Balasanyan, the EBRD Head in Armenia, Dimitri Gvindadze, and E5P Principal Manager Ewa Manik.

The project plans to modernise street lighting by replacing existing high pressure mercury-based lamps with energy-efficient LED ones, upgrading the electrical supply cabling, replacing old poles with new ones, and installing safety equipment to extend the life of the LED lights. The project will improve environmental standards by reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions and will bring the city’s lighting level to international standards.
