EU Delegation to Armenia Meets CoM East Team Leader

The Covenant of Mayors (CoM) East Team Leader, Mr Christophe Frering, met with Ms Sonia Lopez Lopez, Cooperation Officer for Transport, Energy, Environment and Climate at the EU Delegation to Armenia on 1 October 2024.

Mr Frering outlined the project’s key initiatives across Eastern Partnership countries, detailing:

• The project team’s structure and responsibilities
• Support mechanisms for signatories (methodological, technical and communication)
• Assistance with action plans and project proposals
• The newly established Regional Practitioners’ Group
• Collaboration between local project teams and Covenant Coordinators

The meeting highlighted the CoM East Board’s activities, with Mr Frering presenting the agenda for the upcoming second Board meeting. The Board will consider new recommendations for long-term CO2 emission reduction targets for CoM signatories in the Eastern Partnership region.

Ms Lopez received an invitation to the fourth CoM Club meeting in Armenia.
This gathering will:

• Showcase project achievements and future activities
• Present municipal support programmes
• Hold elections for the Club’s new chair and vice-chair

The officials discussed how eligible CoM signatories could participate in the EU-funded “Decarbonisation and Climate Resilience in the Eastern Partnership – EU4ClimateResilience” project’s call for proposals. They acknowledged that signatories might need additional expert support and information about adaptation, drawing from experiences of CoM-DeP programme’s demonstration projects.

Both parties agreed to maintain regular communication about CoM East activities in Armenia and coordinate future events requiring Delegation participation.
