Senaki, Georgia: Flood protection project
With 30% of its population at risk from climate hazards each year, Senaki municipality in Georgia has taken bold action to protect its communities. Through a €4.1 million investment, they’ve implemented impressive flood protection measures across three vulnerable areas:
Key achievements:
- Protected 200 households in Zemochaladidi (90% of village population)
- Unlocked new agricultural opportunities in Akhalsofeli, especially for hazelnut farming
- Safeguarded vital infrastructure in Teklati
- Generated cost savings of 96,390€
The project demonstrates how strategic infrastructure investment can protect both communities and livelihoods.
Through partnership with UNDP and the Green Climate Fund, Senaki has:
- Installed protective gabions and embankments
- Secured agricultural lands from flooding
- Protected critical infrastructure
- Enhanced community resilience
