Students in Armenia test their knowledge in green development game
The Covenant of Mayors – East brought together young people from across Armenia’s Lori region for an intellectual game on green and sustainable development. The event took place in Stepanavan on 6 December 2025 as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week 2025 and was organised in cooperation with the municipalities of Stepanavan, Tashir, Spitak, Vanadzor and Alaverdi.
A total of ten teams – fifty students representing secondary schools, colleges, and the National Polytechnic University of Armenia (Vanadzor branch) – competed in six rounds covering ecology, climate change, renewable energy, greenhouse gases, geography, physics, and chemistry.
The Mayor of Stepanavan, Armen Grigoryan, joined municipal representatives and teachers who accompanied the teams.
“The EU Sustainable Energy Week is a great opportunity to bring students together and inspire them to think about the future of their communities,” said Mayor Grigoryan. “Activities like this strengthen knowledge and encourage young people to take part in sustainable development.”
The competition aimed to create a shared learning space for students from different communities, promote peer exchange, and build capacity for organising similar youth initiatives during Sustainable Energy Days.
Based on the final results, the winning teams were:
- First place – Vanadzor specialised school with advanced training in mathematics and natural sciences (Aren Meliqyan, Milena Araqelyan, Lika Margaryan, Mels Martirosyan, Hayk Artinyan)
- Second place – Stepanavan High School named after Hovhannes Tumanyan (Vache Kharatyan, Melanyan Kharatyan, David Mamajanyan, Nelli Stepanyan, Vladimir Navasardyan)
- Third place – Tashir High School named after Artak Khachatryan (Elen Poghosyan, Yana Mkrtchyan, Srbuhi Avetyan, David Tumoyan, Victoria Chalabyan)
